Why not in the bathroom?

Does the washing machine belong in the bathroom? Not necessarily, but it is possible, as long as you take a few things into consideration. Owners of single-family houses often relegate the washing machine to the cellar as a mainly functional object. In the case of owner-occupied flats, this is generally not the preferred option, while in rented flats communal use of the laundry room often causes a good deal of conflict. Whatever the reason may be, in certain cases it is necessary to bring the washing machine into the living area. The kitchen used to be a popular choice of location, while today separate rooms (known in Switzerland as “Réduit”) or the bathroom are often preferred.

Creating space for a washing machine in the bathroom

Creating space

Whatever you decide, optimising the available space will always be a good idea. There are good reasons for putting a washing machine in the bathroom, if all the items required for daily use can be conveniently stored in the mirror cabinet or in other cupboards. After all, doing laundry is an activity that wasn’t originally envisaged for this space, and which involves various items such as additional bottles and packets and a laundry basket. These things need a space in the bathroom where they won’t get in the way. It’s a good idea to prevent the potential chaos from the outset.

The ideal place

To start with, let’s address the question of the ideal location. In the bathroom, the required water supply connections are already available. These also dictate how much freedom you have with regard to positioning: The connection hoses for the water supply can measure up to two metres, according to Urs Bohnsack, who as product manager at Geberit is an expert in waste fittings and traps. You also need to ensure that there is a drainage connection and a mains connection. And then? The next thing to think about is connecting everything up. “If, when you built the bathroom, you considered the option of installing a washing machine in the bathroom one day, because the property might be rented, you’re in an advantageous position,” says Urs Bohnsack. “In this case, the connections can be prepared straight away, which is definitely the most straightforward solution.”

Help from a plumber

But what if you hadn’t thought of this? “Improvising is always an option,” says specialist Urs Bohnsack, “but this could increase the risk of water damage and also result in a less convenient solution.” A plumber can help here to ensure a reliable retrospective installation. “You can replace the washbasin trap with a model that has a fixed connection for a discharge pipe. For the water supply, the plumber can install an angle piece in the cold water connection on the washbasin that will allow the washing machine to be reliably supplied with water,” explains Urs Bohnsack.
